How Divvy’s Bike Sharing Program Used Social Media to Market Business

How Divvy’s Bike Sharing Program Used Social Media to Market Business

Divvy is a Chicago bike sharing program through the city of Chicago that launched this past summer. Divvy has about 4,000 bikes available to rent, which are located throughout the Chicagoland area; 400 locations to be exact.

Divvy utilizes different forms of social media to get the consumers and residents of Chicago as well as tourist from other parts of the country to have the options to rent bikes for a day or on a monthly membership basis. This provides everyone the opportunity to ride around the city of Chicago to sight-see all that Chicago has to offer. Divvy has it on Facebook page, Twitter, and Flickr social media accounts to market their company’s organization. They even have a Youtube video about their company. Divvy bike program is offered 365 days a year.

This past summer Divvy bike share program marketed very hard through social media outlets, electronic billboards at bus-stops, the city of Chicago website portals, advertisements on the city’s trains and train platforms to get the word out to the patrons of Chicago. Divvy bike share program even gave away special offers through social media outlet Groupon if individuals signed up for the monthly membership fee of $65.

The campaign and marketing ad seemed to have work. Everywhere you looked everyone was pretty much riding around on the infamous pale-blue bikes; young and old. People see it as an economical way to save on city’s transportation, a healthy form of exercise and just overall convenience from the busy hectic traffic of Chicago. I believe the heavy marketing and the support of the city of Chicago made a good impression on the consumers to take advantage of all that Divvy bike share program had to offer.

  1. Update regarding the Divvy Bike Share program:

The "HoliDivvy" will have a decidedly different look than the normal blue Divvys.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced that Divvy, Chicago’s bike share system, will be releasing a special bike into its 300 station transit system to celebrate the holiday season.

The bike, dubbed HoliDivvy, is wrapped in a candy cane design that is fully reflective at night.

“The HoliDivvy bike will be a fun and cheerful way for Chicagoans to use Divvy bike sharing during the holiday season. Even in cold weather, Divvy remains a transportation option for holiday shoppers and festive revelers,” said Mayor Emanuel. “I wish all Divvy riders a safe and warm holiday season.”

More than 740,000 trips have been taken since Divvy launched on June 28, with roughly 382,000 trips taken by Annual Members and 360,000 trips taken by those who have purchased 24-hour Passes. More than 20,000 trips have been taken so far in December. For winter biking tips, including planning your route, dressing for the ride and commuting safely by bike, visit DivvyBikes.com/winter.

Of the CHA employees who participated in the Divvy bike-sharing program during a special start-up offer in the summer, 71 percent said their experience was excellent.

To make the candy cane bike a reality, Divvy worked with Spoken Art, a local artist collaborative that creates bicycle art, to design and fabricate the bike’s festive appearance. Spoken Art strives to increase safe bicycle ridership through artist-designed reflective decals and other creative collaborations.
